Senator Wyden Asks DOE to Consider Regional Factors in Review of LNG Export Applications

Yesterday, at a Senate Energy and Natural Resource Committee hearing to consider the nomination of Christopher Smith to be U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary for Fossil Energy, Chairman Wyden (D-Ore.) requested that DOE consider regional factors in its review of applications to export LNG to nations without a Free Trade Agreement with the United States.  Wyden also criticized DOE for relying on the NERA report on the macroeconomic effects of LNG exports, calling the data out of date.  Smith responded that the NERA report was only one source of economic data used by DOE in its analyses and that DOE was not “pausing” to review the effects of LNG export applications already approved.
