Shell’s Donation to Environmental Fund Under Scrutiny

Shell’s recent donation to the Long Island Sound Futures Fund, a conservation fund established by Congress, has prompted certain local environmental groups to question the company’s motives.  They assert that Shell is using the donation to secure local support for the proposed Broadwater LNG terminal, a joint venture involving Shell and TransCanada. However, representatives from two of the five organizations that received grant money from the Fund argued that the contribution is irrelevant to the Broadwater proposal. “We don’t believe that we’re beholden to anyone based on the receipt of this grant,” said the director of conservation and government relations of Audubon New York, which received a $17,500 donation.
