Uncertainty Regarding Environmental Policy Delays WestPac LNG

The Globe and Mail reports that WestPac LNG has delayed its planned LNG regasification terminal for Texada Island, B.C., by at least one year due to uncertainty as new provincial greenhouse gas emissions regulations are put forward. The developer expects to file its project description in early 2009.

Separately, the Powell River Peak offered an editorial that suggested 2007 was one of the most divisive years in the community’s history, in part due to disagreement over the WestPac LNG proposal. The editorial reports that Mayor Stewart Alsgard has organized a meeting to be held on January 19, 2008, to outline strategies for local governments to pursue sustainable development.
