In an op-ed published by the SouthCoast Today (Mass.), Stephen Smith, the executive director of the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District for Massachusetts, states that contrary to the claims of Weaver’s Cove LNG, the Taunton River is an “undiscovered gem in the heart of Southeastern Massachusetts” that ought to be preserved. Smith also notes that the designation of the Taunton River as “wild and scenic” under federal law would recognize the current recreational uses for the river, as well as future potential for economic growth.
