Gary Coons, Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, expressed his belief that legislation bolstering shipping procedures may be needed to protect provincial communities and waters from damage resulting from a tanker spill. Citing several jurisdictional and regulatory questions regarding tanker traffic, including LNG tanker regulations, Coons claimed that “[i]f the federal government won’t enforce immediate cleanups on our coast, the province needs to step in.” The Northern View (British Columbia) provides further details.
