Maine Legislators and Quoddy Bay LNG Question Canada’s Legal Authority

Maine’s U.S. senators have expressed skepticism about Canada’s legal authority to block the passage of LNG vessels en route to the proposed LNG terminals in Maine. “Any threat to violate international shipping law, for whatever reason, must be treated seriously,” Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins said in a Feb. 1 letter to David Wilkins, the U.S. ambassador to Canada. The president of Quoddy Bay LNG, one of the developers of the proposed Maine LNG terminals, expressed similar concerns in a letter last week to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Platts LNG Daily provides further coverage.
