Jamaica Considers Coal Due to Shortage of Trinidadian LNG

Jamaican government officials expressed concern that Trinidad and Tobago’s inability to supply Jamaica with LNG may threaten the proposed expansion of the Jamalco alumina refinery. As a result, Jamaica may turn to coal as an alternative energy source to help power the refinery and the national energy grid. Under a memorandum of understanding signed in 2004, Trinidad had planned to sell Jamaica 1.1 million tons of LNG per year. Read more in The Jamaica Gleaner.
