Prince George’s County Council Votes to Restrict Development of LNG Storage Tanks

A new zoning plan passed by the Prince George’s County Council effectively would stop Washington Gas Light’s proposal to build a new LNG peak shaving facility in Chillum, Md., according to a report in The Sentinel. The Prince George’s County Council voted 6-1 on May 23 to approve the Transit District Overlay Zone, which covers the area where WGL wants to build the facility and prohibits the construction of new fuel tanks by a public utility. An attorney for WGL characterized the council’s decision as premature, citing the LNG industry ‘s “enviable safety record overall,” and the fact that the council failed to review “the extensive record” established during the public hearings on the matter before the county zoning hearing examiner.
