Georgia Senate Set to Vote on AGL Pipeline Bill Today

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution  reports that the Georgia Senate is prepared to vote on House Bill 1325 today, which would allow AGL to charge its customers for the construction of a pipeline from the Elba Island LNG facility. A Senate committee yesterday adopted an amendment to the bill that would require AGL to demonstrate that the purported benefits from the new pipeline would outweigh its costs and removed a provision creating heightened standards for justifying the pipeline. The story attributes the bill’s success to intense lobbying efforts by AGL, noting that the bill has moved forward despite several meetings in the fall of 2005 between Georgia legislators and top energy company officials in which it was determined that no new laws were necessary to increase natural gas supplies to Georgia.
