Critics Voice Concern Over Potential Environmental Impact of Beacon Port LNG Proposal

Some attendees at yesterday’s public meeting on ConocoPhillips’ proposed Beacon Port offshore LNG project expressed concern over the impact the open-loop system might have on aquatic life. “We support the LNG terminal, but we expect there will be more than a minimal impact to the marine ecosystem with the open-loop system,” said Troy Williamson, a volunteer with the Coastal Conservation Association. William A. Tanner, senior adviser of communications and public affairs for ConocoPhillips, said that the open-loop vaporizers are safe. “The water released back into the Gulf would meet EPA requirements and would be no more harmful to marine life than when we took it out of the Gulf,” Tanner said.
