New Brunswick to Put Pressure on New Canadian PM
Local and provincial politicians from New Brunswick are urging new Minister of Veterans Affairs and local Member of Parliament Greg Thompson to use his influence with the new Canadian Prime Minister to halt three proposed LNG terminals in Maine. John Craig, the mayor of St. Andrews, New Brunswick, has indicated that his town has “given Greg (Thompson) about 60 days from the day he was sworn in to have the prime minister say ‘no’ to LNG tankers officially.” Craig argues that any tankers destined for the three proposed LNG terminals, namely Quoddy Bay, Downeast LNG, and Calais, will have to travel through sovereign Canadian waters and any claim of “innocent passage” is countered by the “volatile, potentially explosive cargo.” Macleans has the full story.
