New York Explores Options to Increase Energy Supplies
Newsday reports that while many utilities and businesses acknowledge the New York metropolitan area’s need for additional energy supplies, they have yet to say publicly that LNG terminals off Long Island waters are a practical way to ease the shortfall. “I don’t think there’s any question that over the next 10 or 12 years Long Island is going to need more gas supply to generate electricity,” said Richard Kessel, chairman of the Long Island Power Authority. “The question is how best to get it in a way that’s economical, safe and environmentally friendly.” Last week, a second regasification terminal was proposed for a site 13.5 miles south of Long Island by the Atlantic Sea Island Group. The new project faces competition from Broadwater Energy, who is expected to file an official application for its facility in the middle of the Long Island Sound today.
