Environmental and Security Issues Discussed at Battery Rock LNG Hearing

During a hearing yesterday before a joint committee of the state legislature, Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs, Stephen Pritchard, criticized a bill that would permit AES to construct an LNG terminal on Outer Brewster Island. “I am mindful of our regional energy needs and our ongoing need for gas supplies,” Pritchard said. “In this instance, however, we must not act…before understanding the full consequences of our actions.” Counterterrorism expert Richard Clarke also testified, contending that Hull, Mass. residents, who are located approximately two miles from the proposed site, face greater potential harm from an accident involving the town’s wind turbine than if an LNG vessel were attacked.
