ConocoPhillips Unlikely to Use Closed-Loop Technology
If Alabama Gov. Bob Riley vetoes ConocoPhillip’s Compass Port LNG project on the basis of its open-loop design, the company may simply abandon the project. “ConocoPhillips will think long and hard about starting over,” said Steve Lawless, the company’s spokesman. “This has been a long and expensive process for what still amounts to no guaranteed outcome for us.” Referring to Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco’s veto of the Main Pass Energy Hub LNG terminal on May 5 and developer Freeport-McMoRan’s subsequent switch to closed-loop vaporization technology, Lawless said, “You would not see us respond like Freeport-McMoRan responded … We’re a much bigger company with many more opportunities.” Under the Deepwater Port Act, Riley has until June 11 to issue a decision on the proposal.
