Main Pass Energy Hub Receives Approval from MARAD

The Maritime Administration has approved Freeport-McMoRan’s Main Pass Energy Hub LNG terminal proposal for development off Louisiana’s coast. The facility will have the ability to deliver 3.1 Bcf/day of gas and store 28 Bcf. Freeport-McMoRan’s initial proposal was vetoed by Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco because of its potential adverse environmental impacts. The approved facility will limit the impact on the marine environment by utilizing a closed-loop system to heat the liquefied gas. According to McMoRan spokesperson Bill Collier, the company will seek suppliers for the terminal and start construction, which is expected to take about three years.
