Task Force Concerned Over Broadwater’s Potential Impact on Naval Base
The Day reports that the Long Island Sound LNG Task Force has expressed concern that LNG tankers en route to Broadwater’s proposed terminal would interfere with operations at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, Conn. “If the congestion proves to be an interference with the operations at the sub base, to the point where it may adversely affect its status as a strategic military facility, then this Task Force would flatly recommend denial of the Broadwater proposal,” the committee said in a report issued last week. A Broadwater spokesperson said LNG tankers are “no different” from other vessels laden with oil and coal that already transit Long Island Sound. “Everything can work together,” she said. Under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, FERC may not approve a facility that affects an active military installation unless the U.S. Secretary of Defense concurs.
