Broadwater LNG Critics to Hold Press Conference Today
Legislators from New York and Connecticut are to join environmental activists in expressing opposition against the Broadwater LNG proposal at a news conference today in Washington, D.C. The press release for the event, issued by New York environmental organization Citizens Campaign for the Environment, announces a “new comprehensive report [that] debunks the need for Broadwater Energy.”
Update: LNGLawBlog attended the press conference today. Speakers at the event said the report represents “positive ideas” and demonstrates that Broadwater opponents are not just saying “no” to the project, but are offering reasonable alternatives. The report concludes that the region’s gas demand does not require the additional capacity offered by Broadwater, and that if it does, there are better alternatives. The report endorses addressing the region’s energy needs through conservation and reliance on expected supply from two LNG import terminals currently under construction in Canada. When asked what lawmakers would do if FERC approves Broadwater, Congressman Rob Simmons of Connecticut responded, “ultimately, if it comes to it, we [will] have legislative alternatives … but we’re not that far yet.” LNGLawBlog has posted the report, as well as press releases from Citizens Campaign for the Environment and Congressman Christopher Shays of Connecticut’s 4th District.
